Dachshund News Roundup!
When you need dachshund inspiration, look no further than red smooth 'Longfellow,' who hails from Tybee Island, Georgia. Longfellow, who lost his leg when hit by a car in 2006, went on to beat out 187 dachshunds to win the 2007 Savannah Wiener Dawg Races! He's back in the news, and this time in a nice story about advances in veterinary care and overcoming devastating pet injuries at msnbc.com.

Firefighter Hero Saves Dachshund
Meet lucky 4-year-old red smooth 'Blin,' who hails from Mesa, Arizona. A fire broke out at her home with her humans gone, and the neighbors called the owners, who asked if their pets were safe. The Mesa Fire Department Captain went in to rescue Blin and a turtle, but a cat is still missing. Excerpt from NBC 12 News: Mesa fire says the captain went into the home, and found the little Dachshund named “Blin” in an area where there was a moderate amount of smoke, and pulled the animal to safety. “The dog was actually hiding,” says [Blin's human] Dan Bleak, “and she actually pulled her out… the dog actually bit her, and she still pulled her out.”
Bless our heroic firemen, or in this case, heroic firewomen. Read more and see a nice news video at NBC12 News.

Still More on Acupuncture in Dachshunds
“She doesn’t seem to be in any pain anymore, so her quality of life is really good,” Linda Henning said. “But if we could do something that inspires that nerve to make her bowel movements work, then it would be better quality of life for all of us.”
The Hennings began researching acupuncture to improve not only Bea’s bowel control, but also the use of her back legs, which occasionally drag because her back is not strong enough to support them.

Dachshund Gets New Grill at the Dentist
On small dogs, like Marley, pulling the tooth might cause damage to the entire jaw.
Marley will need about three to four weeks to straighten out the problem tooth, but he will have to wear a retainer. In the meantime, he has to take it easy on the chew toys and the games of tug-o-war.
Read all about Marley's trip to the dentist and see a video at CBS4.

Dachshund News Roundup!
'Aristotle,' a 3 month-old chocolate and tan longhair puppy, was stolen along with cash and a digital camera from the Humane Society of Huron Valley Friday night in Ann Arbor, Michigan, prompting the agency to offer a $500 reward for his safe return. The agency is concerned that he might have medical issues which need prompt attention. Read more at mlive.com.
UPDATE April 24, 7:14 AM: An Ann Arbor police officer was able to track down the stolen dachshund puppy. He noticed a homeless man carrying a dog for the first time, and later saw the pup's photo on the front page of the Ann Arbor News. He had remembered seeing the man getting a free meal at a church, so he went there and asked around to find where he was. Read all about it at mlive.com.
Pampered black and tan wirehair 'Thea Marie' enjoys staying at the Atlantic City Pet Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. About 70% of the hotel's guests are visitors from out of town. Read all about the newer business at Press of Atlantic City.
Finally, smooth chocolate and tan 'Hershey' wants to remind everyone about the dangers of xylitol in dogs, the ingredient commonly found in sugar-free gum. Hershey inhaled 15 mini-sticks of Trident, and soon found himself at the emergency vet. Two years ago, the rescue boy got into a similar predicament with a chocolate advent calendar. UC Davis Doxie Derby Recap
Ninety-six dachshunds competed in the annual Doxie Derby weiner race as part of the University of California, Davis, annual Picnic Day on Saturday. An estimated 50,000 people turned out for the Picnic Day, of which the wiener races have been a part of for over 30 years! Woof! Excerpt from The Sacramento Bee: Nothing brings Davis together like wiener dogs. Dressed in tiny racing outfits. Competing against each other in the 50-yard dash.
Thousands packed UC Davis' Arc Pavilion on Saturday to cheer the dachshunds as they scampered across the matted gym floor, ostensibly chasing a rabbit, but more often wandering off course or bowing out to sniff each other.
"Oh well," said Geoff Straw, minutes after his dog Ginger casually ran in the opposite direction of the finish line, thereby ending her shot at Doxie Derby glory.
"At least we didn't have to chase her into the stands like last year."

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Christian Slater
He rose to fame in Hollywood after landing the role of Binx Davey in The Legend of Billie Jean (1985). He moved to Los Angeles in 1987 to pursue a further acting career after dropping out of high school. After having a starring role in the cult hit Heathers (1989), he became somewhat known as the Hollywood bad-boy, having many run-ins with the law. He is also well-known for having dated stars such as Winona Ryder, Christina Applegate, Samantha Mathis and was at one time engaged to actress/model Nina Huang.
In 2000, he married Ryan Haddon, the daughter of 70s model Dayle Haddon. The couple have two children, Jaden Christopher (b. 1999) and Eliana Sophia (b. 2001). As of early 2005 they separated and later divorced.
The above photo of Christian, wife Ryan, and their mini black and tan longhair was taken in New York in 2000. Unfortunately we don't know the name of the doxie, but if anyone has any more info, send it in!

The Johnny Depp Dachshund Connection
Michelle C. writes: Dear Joey and Maggie, thought you might like this new video at youtube where Johnny Depp starts a wiener race on Jay Leno!
Thanks for the tip Michelle! Fun clip!
This segment aired on Jay Leno on June 27th, 2003 when Mr. Depp was promoting Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. But this isn't Johnny's first run-in with a dachshund. Excerpt from the now defunct British magazine Neon: On 14 September 1994, a funny thing happened to Johnny Depp. At 5am, ensconced with his new girlfriend Kate Moss in the $500-a-night Mark Hotel, East 77th Street, New York, he was inadvertently dragged into a violent and destructive incident. "I'll tell you what happened," Depp says earnestly. "I was sitting on the couch in my hotel room, when a really big dachshund jumped out of the closet. I felt it was my duty to retrieve this animal, so I chased it for 20 minutes, but it wouldn't cooperate. Finally it dived out of the window. And there I was, stuck with the evidence."
The evidence in question was a couple of broken chairs, a damaged table and a mangled lamp. With no sign of the dachshund, he was charged the same morning at Manhattan Central Booking Court with 'criminal mischief'. It was the perfect rap for Johnny Depp: essentially innocuous, verging on the quaint. He walked after writing a cheque for $9,738 to pay for the damage.

Giant Dachshund?
Meet giant red smooth 'Leonardo!' Weighing in at 65 pounds, he's a big happy 2.5 year-old boy. He loves to eat the meals that his human cooks for him; his favorite is fried chicken. (We wanna go live at his house!)
We questioned his pedigree a bit, but he told us that he was 100% dachshund, and that his human paid $1,000 for him. We weren't about to doubt the big guy.

Wieners in History: Dachshund Face on Barroom Floor
Re-enacting a jumping accident, a Dachshund Named Stretch is seen here lying on the floor of a San Francisco bar. With his splint showing, Stretch posed for Photographer Bob Campbell.
Six years ago Stretch was a pup without a home or a pub to call his own, and he accepted Bartender Paul Aro's offer of some beef jerky. Ever since then he has been hooked. So says a news story spotted by American Dachshund Obedience News Reporter Barbara Nichols (who has a special interest in Dachshund jumping).
Stretch learned that if he backed up to the rear of the tavern, got up a good head of steam, and took a flying leap, he could jump up on a bar stool.
But one day Aro waxed the floor. Stretch lost traction at the time of take-off point and slammed into the side of the stool. The attempted jump broke his right rear leg.
Which just goes to show - or does it?

Dachshund News Roundup!
The Olsons, like many dog owners, say they went through a bunch of names the first few weeks before they finally found one that stuck. And, Buddy it was. A name, Olson said, that is not hard for the little guy to live up to.
“My son, his nickname was always Buddy and he said he wanted to name the puppy Buddy because he didn’t want to be called Buddy anymore. That’s how (the dog) got his name,” Olson said. “The name has to fit their personality, and his does.”

Loyal Dachshund Dog Finds Way to Owner's Funeral
A huge thanks goes out to 'Clancy' for the tip about this story - one of the most amazing canine stories we've ever heard - dachshund or otherwise. Get ready to meet 2.5-year-old red smooth 'Sam,' who hails from Clarksville, Tennessee. Sam's human passed away on Monday, and Sam, who wears an electric fence collar, escaped his yard and was found 2.5 days later at the church where the funeral was being held. Sam had to cross busy highways to arrive at the church, which was six miles from his home. Excerpt from WKRN: Ever since Sam was a puppy, he rarely left his owner's side.
When owner Teddy Crockarell lost his battle with cancer last Monday, his wife Marcene believes Sam must have sensed something was wrong.
The dog, who wears an electric fence collar, ran away from the couple's home on Kimbrough Road.
Two and a half days later, after searching for Sam, the family arrived at a church on Trenton Road, over six miles from their home, for Teddy's funeral and discovered Sam was waiting for them.
Marcene Crockarell said, "He was just shivering and sitting there by the doors. We just lost it and all we were doing was hollering, 'Sam! Sam!' and here he comes and he was just all over all three of us."
There is no way to know what prompted Sam, who had never left home on foot, to run away and end up at a church he'd never seen, but is family has a theory.
"If he walked those six miles he was looking for his papa... but he found him, and that's what's good about this whole situation, he found him and he found his way back here," said Marcene Crockarell's son-in-law Howard.

'Cecelia' Teaches Kids About Pets
During a pet festival on Friday, students spent some time with animals from Second Chance Animal Shelter.
Many of the animals had medical conditions, had been beaten or were left as strays on the sides of roads.
A dachshund outfitted with wheels and a Chihuahua with only one eye were some of the children's favorites. Jacklyn Asher said seeing the injured pets made her want to help them out even more.

Signs of the Dachshund Revolution Surface in Washington, DC
In response to statements such as those by John McCain calling Washington "the city of Satan," The Washington Post revealed the above map on Wednesday, detailing a demonic pentagram...."a roadmap for Lucifer which bores directly into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue."
BoingBoing uncovered the real threat however: "A giant malevolent dachshund bearing down on the Capitol! It's clearly visible (and angry) as you can see."
Are you ready for The Dachshund Revolution? Be afraid. Be very afraid. We're hoping that dachshund lovers will be spared to continue their arduous tasks as servants. Enjoy your Friday.

I Pity the Man
I Pity the Man
by May Fair
I pity the man who never has known
The pleasure of owning a pup;
Who never has watched his funny ways
In the business of growing up.
I pity the man who enters his gate
Alone and un-noticed at night;
No dog to welcome him joyously home
With his frantic yelps of delight.
I pity the man who never receives
In hours of bitterest woe,
Sympathy shown by a faithful dog
In a way only he seems to know.
I pity the man with a hatred of dogs;
He is missing something fine;
For the friendship between a man and his dog
Is a feeling almost divine.
