Those Beautiful Westminster Dachshunds

(Screen capture from wire judging at Westminster)

Our buddies 'Peaches' and 'Piper' write: Westminster has videos of all the breeds individual judging sessions. It's pretty cute to see even Westminster caliber dachshunds act so wienerish!

If you haven't been over to the Westminster site yet to see the judging of the dachshunds, make sure to check it out. The videos are very nicely done. Way to go Westminster Wieners!

Good Luck to All the Dachshunds at Westminster Today

After the Kentucky Derby, Westminster is America's second-oldest sporting tradition. The first show was held in 1877, when Rutherford B. Hayes was president, back when the telephone had just been invented and before electric light and power had come to be.
The 2-day event starts today at Madison Square Garden in New York, and even though a dachshund has never won best in show, we will of course be rooting for the dachshunds! The underdog! This is the year!

Above, meet handsome wire-hair 'Romeo,' his human Janet Schwalbe of Pendergrass, Georgia, and one of his handlers, Gillian Caudill of Watkinsville, Georgia. Romeo will be spending most of this day in a bench showing, where people have an opportunity to "meet the breeds" and see which dogs best handle standing on display for hours. Romeo also will compete for Best of Variety (or the Best of Opposite Sex) and three awards of merit.

Dachshunds Bound for Westminster

It's hard work to look so handsome. Meet English Cream longhair 'Thomas' and his human Cynthia Perceful of Neosho, Missouri. Thomas is preparing to head to New York City for the 132nd Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show next week. Go Thomas Go! Even though Thomas retired from the show circuit several years ago, his mom, owner of Royal Oak Miniature Dachshunds Kennel, didn't want to pass up an opportunity for him to show at Westminster. Excerpt from The Neosho Daily News: “He will have to look beautiful,” said the owner. “His conformation will have to be compared to AKC standard for long haired dachshund, the way his head is shaped, the shape of his eyes, the coat, the color, his bone structure, his muscle strength, the way he carries himself, the way he walks and the way he behaves in the ring. He will be very animated, he will keep his eyes on his handler and he will be excited and happy. When he gaits (walks) he will be trotting and look like he is kind of floating on air, as he goes around the ring. The judges will be comparing all of these dachshunds, not to one another, but to the perfect dachshund standard.”
“Thomas has to beat 22 other dachshunds in the dachshund ring and if he wins that, he will go to the hound ring,” said Perceful.”
Read all about Thomas and his career at The Neosho Daily News.
The hound group will be showing live on USA Network on Monday, February 11th, the first day of the two-day event.
Even though a dachshund has never won best in show at Westminster, we'll be rooting for Thomas and all the doxies! The Westminster Kennel Club

Westminster, So Much To Answer For

It's 2008, and so what did this, the 132nd year of Westminster bring us? A first-time best in show for a dachshund? Nah, a beagle took the hounds, longhair doxie second. At least we're still the underdog.
It may as well be 1945, so enjoy this interesting dachshund illustration from that year by Gladys Cook which details the different dachshund coat types. Westminster doesn't know what it's missing.
Chicago Cubs..., Dachshunds at Westminster, it's pretty much the same thing: "just wait til next year!"

Westminster, There's Only One

That's what they say, but we're still waiting for a Dachshund best in show. We've seen SO MANY terriers. Regardless, just 7 days to go until the 133rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Are you ready? It's always great fun. Above is the 2009 poster available at Westminster.
There were lots of news reports about dachshunds headed to Westminster last year, hopefully some new ones will start filtering in this week.

Redneck Dachshund

You might be a redneck if you take your dachshund for a walk and you both use the same tree.
Regardless, this is pretty 2-year-old mini red smooth 'Dynadaux Redneck Girl,' and her nickname is 'Bellamy,' after the Bellamy Brothers who recorded the song, “Redneck Girl.” Bellamy and her human, Donnie Breaun, who hail from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, hope to impress the judges tomorrow at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden. Go get 'em Bellamy! Excerpt from the Murfreesboro Post: “Redneck Girl” will compete for conformation, defined as the “structure and physical characteristics of a dog.” Judges examine the whole dog for how it’s built and how it moves.
“Her movement is what sells her,” Breaun said with a touch of pride. “She has gorgeous movement.”
Dogs must be champions in other shows to compete at Westminster. The top five dogs are automatically invited. The 11-pound “Redneck Girl” is a No. 5 dachshund of both miniature and standards with only four others ahead of her. She is the No. 1 miniature dachshund.
Read all about Bellamy at the Murfreesboro Post.
If you want a closer look at the dachshunds at Westminster, competition in each breed and variety may be viewed in streaming video at The Westminster Kennel Club. This video will be available within two hours of completion of the judging of that breed.

Dachshunds To Watch Out For: His Name Is Cooper

Breeder-judge Diane McCormick presents Cooper Award of Merit and Select at DCA Host Show 2011

Grand Champion Lockshire Detour to Sanlyn, aka 'Cooper,' has been invited to the 2012 Westminster Dog Show which will air live next Monday and Tuesday - check you local listings.   We'll be rooting for this handsome dynamo - all 27 pounds of him.  Excerpt from the Enumclaw Courier Herald out of Oregon:

Cooper enjoys the limelight, so when he and Kathy Lockyer step onto the green carpet at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Monday in Madison Square Garden in the heart of New York City, the 4-year-old wirehair standard dachshund should be a hit.
“He is just a wonderful ambassador for the breed,” Lockyer said of her mustached, long-bodied dynamo. “He likes people and people like him. I like to see the smiles when they see his face.”
Cooper will compete with 21 other wirehair standard dachshund entries, one of the largest groups at the prestigious show and part of the hound category.
"To go to Westminster; to be seen at Westminster; to get invited to Westminster is a big deal because you don’t get invited very often,” said Lockyer, who pointed out the top in the breeds are invited and then there’s a drawing.
“Stepping out on the green – it’s just a privilege to be there,” she said.

Noted Dachshund Author, Breeder, Judge Dorothy O. "Dee" Hutchinson Passes

Humble thanks to Helen Paradise for sending in the unfortunate news of the passing of Dorothy O. "Dee" Hutchinson - Dachshund author, breeder, and judge.  The hearts of the Dachshund community go out to Mrs. Hutchinson's family and friends.  Helen writes:  I thought you might like to know that one of the great Dachshund show breeders (Rose Farm Dachshunds) and author of The Complete Dachshund and a well know AKC show judge (including six Westminster assignments) has passed away in Connecticut. Below is some of the information on her, her life, book and one of the Best in Show winners one of her dogs had sired. The death notice is from the Greenwich times. I am also attaching her photograph. Those of us in the Dachshund world have lost a great lady who will never be replaced.

Thank you,
Helen Paradise

DOROTHY "DEE" O. HUTCHINSON died in peace at home on May 15, 2010. She was 71. Born in Boston, Mass., and raised in Greenwich. Dee graduated from the Low-Heywood School in Stamford, after which she married her lifelong mate and best friend, the late Bruce O. Hutchinson. Dee and Bruce had lived in Pound Ridge, N.Y. for 30 years before moving to Westbrook in 1998. Dee enjoyed an admirable career as a noted and respected breeder of Rose Farm Dachshunds. She was a valuable member of the Greenwich Kennel Club, the Dachshund Club of America, she served for many years as a delegate to the AKC and she was an irreplaceable mentor to countless dog enthusiasts. She spent more than 30 years honing her skills as an AKC judge and in 2001, she was appointed the title of All Breed Judge. She earned a reputation as a renowned international judge and she had the honor to judge groups at both The Westminster Kennel Club as well as the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. She was a member of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich, CT and Old Lyme Country Club. Dee is survived by her children, Nancy H. DeLorenzo of Middle Grove, N.Y., Sandra O. Gray of Annandale, N.J., the late John O. Hutchinson and her twin sister, Katherine Brown of Sarasota, Fla. She was the proud grandmother of six and she had one great-grandson. A celebration of her life will be held at Old Lyme Country Club, 40 McCurdy Rd., Old Lyme, CT on Friday, May 21 at 1 p.m. Arrangements by Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, Centerbrook.

Dorothy O. Hutchinson, of Westbrook, Connecticut, the daughter of Dachshund breeder Nancy Onthank, was born into the sport of dogs. As the breeder of well over a hundred Dachshund champions in all coats and both sizes, Mrs. Hutchinson has kept her mother's Rose Farm kennel name alive and well. In addition to her famous Dachshunds, she has owned several other breeds.
An AKC judge since 1973, Mrs. Hutchinson is approved to judge all breeds. She has judged in forty-six of the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and thirteen foreign countries. Of her six Westminster assignments, she recalls her judging of the Hound Group in 1995 as her most memorable moment on the famous green carpet.
Mrs. Hutchinson is a life member of the Dachshund Club of America and has served the club as a board member and AKC delegate. She is also a longtime member of the Greenwich Kennel Club and spent nearly twenty years as the club's chairman.
The Complete Dachshund, published by Howell Books in 1998, was co-written by Mrs. Hutchinson and her husband, Bruce. The Hutchinsons have two daughters and six grandchildren. Between judging assignments, Mrs. Hutchinson enjoys skiing and sailing.

Westminster 2010: One, Two, Three, and the Dachshunds are OUT

Congratulations to the Whippet, 2-year-old Ch Starline's 'Chanel,' for taking the Hound Group at the 2010 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.  It looked as though wirehair Dachshund Ch Gleneagle's Who's Famous Now had a great chance at taking the spot after making the initial cut and being THE crowd favorite, but ultimately the crown went to the Whippet, followed by the Greyhound, Scottish Deerhound bitch Ch. Foxcliffe Hickory Wind, and the seven-year-old Australian-imported PBGV dog Ch. Rokeena Carte Blanche.

Just wait 'til next year!

Exhausted Westminster Dachshunds

Well, the 133rd Westminster has come and gone, and the Dachshunds are rightly exhausted. Congratulations to America's new top dog, the Best in Show, 10-year-old 'Stump,' a Sussex Spaniel. What a nice surprise.....old dogs are beautiful too!

It's interesting to note that Harley was just as exhausted after the 2008 Westminster, last year. Or maybe she's just always exhausted. We are.

Great Westminster Dachshund History: Judging Dachshund

wirephoto1
Judging Dachshund by Samuel Falk - click it to enlarge

"Woof."  Judges rate this the best feature picture of 1937.  It won first prize in that division at the Press Photographers' association exhibit in New York.  It is a "spot" news picture of a judge in action at a Madison Square Garden dog show.  Its show title is "Judging Dachshund."  Source:  Chicago Daily Tribune; Jan 30, 1938.  Photo:  Joey and Maggie's personal collection.

The original text on the back of the photo read:

CANDID CAMERA SIDELIGHTS OF WESTMINSTER DOG SHOW

NEW YORK CITY - On Feb 10, 11, and 12 thousands of dog lovers jammed into Madison Square Garden to witness the sixty-first annual exhibition of the Westminster Kennel Club.  The 3,144 dogs entered, representing 96 breeds from all parts of the world set a record.  The Wide World Service has already brought you general views of the show and its champions.  In this set of pictures, made by a staff photographer working with a candid camera, Wide World now brings you some of the scenes visitors saw in the judging ring and at the benches of the blue ribbon event of the canine world.

A dignified Englishman takes his judging seriously, getting down on his hands and knees to evaluate a Dachshund, one of the most popular breeds in the show.

The Dachshund, Iris Love, and The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Iris Love holding a dachshund in 1971
Photograph by: Condé Nast Archive/CORBIS

It seems like all roads lead to Iris Love and Westminster in the world of dachshunds. Now we know why Wiener Takes All labeled Mrs. Love "Patron Saint of the Dachshund World." We'd love to meet her. We love her support of piebalds. We love her devotion to the breed. And boy, we'd love to attend her annual dachshund soiree at Tavern on the Green. (Iris....call us.......wink wink!)
Condé Nast Portfolio offers up a revealing look at Iris Love, the world of dachshunds, and the world of show dogs and Westminster. We couldn't even begin to highlight just a piece of this must-read article. Don't miss it, it's called The Long Journey to Be Top Dog.
