Dachshund

For Immediate Release:  Dachshund, a press release from some time and place in the groovy 1970s, source unknown:

I'm tired of being called a "sausage" and of hearing myself described as the ideal family dog because everyone can pet me at once.  As if the ridicule isn't bad enough, children have a habit of picking me up by my front legs.  That hurts!  I may look funny, but I'm not a wind-up toy that can be picked up any old way.

Retro Fun: Dachshunds in 1960s TV Shows

We love the fashion, the music, and chain-smoking political incorrectness of the 1960s, especially what can be found in the TV shows that entered American homes at the time.  Our friend Sandy Firebird and her boy 'Sammy' must be awful quick with the camera to be able to send in some super shots of Dachshunds who appeared in a couple of these shows.  Sandy writes:

Dear Joey and Rowdy,

Just thought I'd send you a couple of lo-tech shots from my TV. Both shows are from the '60's-my favorite decade.
The first is "Route 66", an oftentimes dark look at the human condition as experienced by 2 young men. They sometimes wander off that famous road and we observe some excellent views of b/w Americana. In this episode one of the lads is accused of hurting the little guy .Fortunately, it all ends well.
In the second shot, we see Rob and Laura Petrie. For some reason they are at the vets where they meet a dingbat with a chubby Dachshund. "The Dick Van Dyke Show" is lighthearted fare and very enjoyable.

All for now,
Sandy and Sammy

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Orson Welles

Photo via Corbis

Who?  Surely you must know.  George Orson Welles (May 6, 1915 – October 10, 1985) was an American actor, director, writer and producer who worked extensively in theater, radio and film. He is best remembered for his innovative work in all three media, most notably Caesar (1937), a groundbreaking Broadway adaption of Julius Caesar and the debut of the Mercury Theatre; The War of the Worlds (1938), the most famous broadcast in the history of radio; and Citizen Kane (1941), which many critics and scholars name as the best film of all time.
So let's ask ourselves....was he also a Dachshund Lover?  Of course he was.  He is seen here with his third wife Italian actress Paola Mori, daughter Beatrice, and pretty little red longhair 'Columbina.'  The Corbis photo notes:

12/27/57-Hoboken, New Jersey: Actor Orson Welles is shown on deck of the American export liner SS Exchorda with his wife, daughter Beatrice, 2, and toy long hair dachshund, Columbina, before sailing today. The actor originally had passage booked on the Liberte and was to have sailed this morning, but plans had to be changed at the last moment when it was learned that Columbina could not be admitted into France.

There was also an AP story which appeared in several newspapers around the county at the time which had more detail about the trip:

And finally, in The Six Degrees of Dachsaration, it should be noted that Mr. Welles' second wife was Dachshund Lover Rita Hayworth.

38 Dachshunds Rescued From Texarkana Arkansas Home

Seen here are nineteen - just half - of the thirty-eight Dachshunds rescued from a Texarkana, Arkansas home last week by Jeff Tarpley Rescue out of Cedar Park, Texas.  Mr. Tarpley, who runs his own rescue group, got a call from a man in his 60's who said he and his wife had too many dogs.  This is what he saw when he opened the door to their home.
The Associated Press reports:

All of the dogs have names, but Tarpley says he suspects the couple made up the names on the spot when the rescue group arrived.
The couple told Tarpley that they got two dogs 10 years ago but never had them spayed or neutered — and this was the result.

These guys could be poster-dogs for a spay and neuter campaign.  Ten of the dogs were taken to Diamond Dachshund Rescue of Texas, while others were sent to a Texarkana kennel or placed in foster homes.

The number of Dachshunds increased from thirty eight the very next day after the rescue when newborn puppies made their appearance into this world.

Donations to help these guys are being accepted at ChipIn.

Keep up with this rescue at Jeff Tarpley Rescue's Facebook Page.

There Are A Thousand Ways To Hold Your Dachshund

(ouch)

But this should not be one of them.

According to legend:  The dachshund's tail extends directly from its rear in a thick, straight line before narrowing to a point. Originally, this sturdy tail served as a built-in handle for hunters needing to pull their dachshunds from a burrow hole. When relaxed, the dachshund lowers its tail a few inches below the pelvic bone line. If the dachshund is angry or agitated, its tail whips back and forth in a straight line.

Respect our tails. Watch our tails.  Learn from our tails. They will reveal you all you need to know about us.  And don't be jealous because you ain't got one.

Dachshund Reincarnation

There's nothing as sad in the world as losing your beloved little furry ones, and when they go, humans will go to great lengths to fill that void in their lives.  There are stories of people who have had their dogs cloned, and there is a Dachshund Lover from Utah who right now is on the hunt for the mother of his little girl 'Sophie' who passed in a fire last month -  he has hopes that the owners will breed her so he can, in some way, get the closest thing possible to his Sophie back.
While not going to such great extremes, enter Mary and Bruce Peterson, seen here, with their newly adopted Dachshund 'Anna.'  Anna is the sister of a Dachshund named 'Jenny' that the Wisconsin natives lost to IVDD last year, but it was just fate that led Anna to their home.  Excerpt from the Journal Sentinel:

Jenny, a 9-year-old miniature dachshund belonging to Bruce and Mary Peterson of Waukesha, died in March 2011.
Last week, the Petersons got Jenny's sister, Anna. She had been turned over to a vet by an elderly woman who couldn't care for her anymore.
With the original breeder of the dogs acting as a middleman, Bruce drove to the veterinary clinic and got Anna on the day she was scheduled to be euthanized.
"When the doctor entered the room with the dog, I thought I was seeing things. She looked just like Jenny. I was overloaded with a ton of emotions," Bruce told me.
The story starts June 21, 2001, when Jenny and Anna and a few more littermates were born to a dachshund owned by breeders Pat and Carol Tesar in Edgerton. The Thompsons, who then lived in Kenosha, took Jenny home in September just days before Sept. 11, and a couple from Lake Mills took Anna.
The Tesars, who have since retired from the breeding business, have stayed in touch with many people who have purchased their puppies over the years. This month, they stopped in to see the woman who originally took Anna.
She is now 82, and her husband died two years ago. He had been very attached to Anna, but the wife had difficulty connecting to the dog after her husband's death. On more than one occasion, most recently on July 8, Anna bit the woman.
The woman told the Tesars she planned to take the dog to the Waterloo Veterinary Clinic. She had become afraid of Anna and was worried the dog would bite someone else.
The minute he looked into the eyes of Jenny's sister Anna, Bruce knew she was coming home with him. The clinic lent him a dog carrier for the ride home from Waterloo. Bruce called Mary on the way home to tell her they were dog owners again.
Anna immediately warmed to her new owners and their home and backyard. The biting stopped. Bruce took Jenny's collar, which had been in a place of honor in the house along with a tin containing Jenny's ashes, and he put it on Anna. He retrieved Jenny's doggy bed, pillow, blanket, bowls and favorite toys from storage. They belong to Anna now.
Anna has most of Jenny's chocolate brown and tan coloring and her mannerisms, though she does sleep later in the morning. Jenny was insistent about going outside before dawn. The neighbors noticed the new dog and got an eerie feeling that Jenny had returned.
"I said to my neighbor that you don't get too many opportunities to get your dog back. That's what it feels like," Bruce said.
Jenny died too young, he said, "and for us, it's like we get to finish what we started out doing."

Wow.  Read more of this story at the Journal Sentinel.

Therapy Dachshund Celebrates Third Birthday

Happy Birthday to 'Wall-E' - Therapy Dachshund Extraordinaire!  Wall-E got a surprise birthday party on Monday at the Prince William Area Agency on Aging's Senior Day Program center in Woodbridge, Virginia.  Excerpt from Insidenova:

The dog’s third birthday was highlighted by doggie tricks, games and a highlight for him—a small ice cream sandwich all his own.

His owner and trainer, Nancy Jo Rapalee, gave him some peanut butter ice cream after a room full of people of all ages sang “Happy Birthday.”

Three other therapy dogs named Missy, Oliver and Sage, barked during the song and showed their support for their furry colleague.

But that wasn’t all, Wall-E and his fellow canine pals from Manassas Therapy Dogs did some tricks for the crowd. Kids at the party also had some toys to keep them busy, too.

Evelena McPherson, a participant in the day program, sat in her chair and smiled ear-to-ear as Rapalee brought the dog of honor to her lap.

“I love him,” she said as she pet his back and neck. “He’s a precious little dog.”

We love her to death and spoil her rotten.  Maybe that’s why she insists on having to share everything with my sister’s little baby!

Happy Birthday and sleep tight little one.

Remembering E.B. White

E.B. White and his Dachshund 'Minnie'

Yesterday would have been E.B. White's 113th birthday.  Perhaps most famous for penning "Charlotte's Web" and "Stuart Little," Mr. White was also a regular contributor to The New Yorker, and co-wrote "The Elements of Style."
Dachshund Lovers know him for his poetic descriptions of the beloved Dachshunds that he had in his life.  In 1951, he was accused by the ASPCA of not paying his dog tax and, as a result, "harboring" an unlicensed dog. This was his poetic response:

12 April 1951

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
York Avenue and East 92nd Street
New York, 28, NY

Dear Sirs:

I have your letter, undated, saying that I am harboring an unlicensed dog in violation of the law. If by "harboring" you mean getting up two or three times every night to pull Minnie's blanket up over her, I am harboring a dog all right. The blanket keeps slipping off. I suppose you are wondering by now why I don't get her a sweater instead. That's a joke on you. She has a knitted sweater, but she doesn't like to wear it for sleeping; her legs are so short they work out of a sweater and her toenails get caught in the mesh, and this disturbs her rest. If Minnie doesn't get her rest, she feels it right away. I do myself, and of course with this night duty of mine, the way the blanket slips and all, I haven't had any real rest in years. Minnie is twelve.

In spite of what your inspector reported, she has a license. She is licensed in the State of Maine as an unspayed bitch, or what is more commonly called an "unspaded" bitch. She wears her metal license tag but I must say I don't particularly care for it, as it is in the shape of a hydrant, which seems to me a feeble gag, besides being pointless in the case of a female. It is hard to believe that any state in the Union would circulate a gag like that and make people pay money for it, but Maine is always thinking of something. Maine puts up roadside crosses along the highways to mark the spots where people have lost their lives in motor accidents, so the highways are beginning to take on the appearance of a cemetery, and motoring in Maine has become a solemn experience, when one thinks mostly about death. I was driving along a road near Kittery the other day thinking about death and all of a sudden I heard the spring peepers. That changed me right away and I suddenly thought about life. It was the nicest feeling.

You asked about Minnie's name, sex, breed, and phone number. She doesn't answer the phone. She is a dachshund and can't reach it, but she wouldn't answer it even if she could, as she has no interest in outside calls. I did have a dachshund once, a male, who was interested in the telephone, and who got a great many calls, but Fred was an exceptional dog (his name was Fred) and I can't think of anything offhand that he wasn't interested in. The telephone was only one of a thousand things. He loved life — that is, he loved life if by "life" you mean "trouble," and of course the phone is almost synonymous with trouble. Minnie loves life, too, but her idea of life is a warm bed, preferably with an electric pad, and a friend in bed with her, and plenty of shut-eye, night and days. She's almost twelve. I guess I've already mentioned that. I got her from Dr. Clarence Little in 1939. He was using dachshunds in his cancer-research experiments (that was before Winchell was running the thing) and he had a couple of extra puppies, so I wheedled Minnie out of him. She later had puppies by her own father, at Dr. Little's request. What do you think about that for a scandal? I know what Fred thought about it. He was some put out.

Sincerely yours,

E. B. White

Vintage Dachshund Socio-Political Commentary

Suffragettes were members of women's suffrage (right to vote) movements in the late 19th and 20th century, particularly in the United Kingdom and United States. Suffragist is a more general term for members of suffrage movements, whether radical or conservative, male or female. The term "suffragette" is particularly associated with the actions of the women's suffrage movement in the UK in the early 20th century, which included chaining themselves to railings and setting fire to mailbox contents. One woman, Emily Davison, died while trying to throw a suffragette banner over the King's horse at the Epsom Derby on 5 June 1913. Many suffragettes were imprisoned in Holloway Prison in London, and were force-fed after going on hunger strike. In the United States, women over 21 were first allowed to vote in Wyoming from 1869 and in Utah from 1870, and with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment the suffrage was extended to women across the United States in time for the 1920 presidential election. Women over 21 were allowed to vote in New Zealand from 1893, in Australia from 1894, and in Canada from 1919. Women in the UK were given the vote in 1918 if over 30 and meeting certain property qualifications, and in 1928 suffrage was extended to all women over the age of 21.  Source.

Tough Guy Tamed: Danny Trejo

Maybe you've seen tough guy actor Danny Trejo in one of the many movies he's been in, including Con Air, Six Days Seven Nights, Spy Kids, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Predators, Delta Force, Bubble Boy....the list goes on and on.
But you probably haven't seen him snuggling up with a little black and tan Dachshund.  Thanks to our friend Doris for sending in the link to the Daily Mail, where these photos show the actor taking a break while filming Machete Kills in Texas.

Former convict Danny Trejo's heart melted when he came face-to-face with an adorable puppy on the set of his latest movie in Texas.
The blood stained actor sat with the cute pooch as he waited around between takes, with the cute Dachshund deciding to lick his new friend on the face.
It is unclear whether the dog is working on the film, or whether he is one of the Grindhouse actor's sizable collection of pooches.
Danny is clearly a soft man at heart when it comes to dogs.

It's Gonna Be A Honey Of A Holiday

Who really needs to Oohhhhhh and Aahhhhhh at fireworks this Independence Day when you can Oohhhhhh and Aahhhhhh at the festive spirit of our pretty pal 'Honey?'

Anxiety, Revisited

Maggie's Little Helper

Two years ago today, we posted:

BOOM! Whistle, POP! fizzle....KaPow! It's a tough weekend for 'Maggie,' your 'Long and Short of it All' hostess, and many of our Dachshund friends. Does this herbal anxiety med help relieve the stress? Not really. But along with soothing music, closed windows, lavender spray, kisses, and a few extra treats, it's a start.

Maggie passed away nearly ten months ago, but we still think of her every single day.  You never know what will spark a reminder of the little goddess in your mind - the jingling of a dog tag from around the corner and how she would alert us before she even saw said dog; spring gardening, and how the little goddess would gently burrow her soft furry nose into the business at hand to make sure that every single seedling was being planted properly and with the utmost care; stumbling across a beautiful old photo of the little goddess that you'd forgotten about; or, in Maggie's case, feeling an innate parental need to comfort her whenever thunderstorms strike or whenever fireworks go off.  After all, she was your little girl, your little goddess, and if she wasn't happy you found a way to help her.
Well, the fireworks have started, and every time there's a sonic boom, we look down at our feet to see if Maggie is OK - where did she go?  Is she so riled that she's hiding behind the toilet or in the bathtub or in the closet or under the bed?   Nope, she's not here.  But how we wish she were just so we could comfort her one more time, hold her silky soft body gently in our arms, and tell her that everything is going to be fine, everything is going to be OK, and nothing will ever hurt you baby girl.  We promise.

Don't Let This Happen To You

We feature this video every year at this time, and every time we see it we just CRINGE.  Keep your dogs safe this Independence Day - keep them at home far away from the festivities, and keep them indoors where they can't get into any trouble.
