If only we lived in Key West. The warmth. The sun. The dachshunds! In this Dec. 31, 2007 photo released by the Florida Keys News Bureau, 'Lola,' left, and 'Nosey,' (what a great name!) right, pause for a moment during the annual Key West Dachshund Walk in Key West, Fla. The third New Year's Eve procession of canines down sidewalks that border the island city's Duval Street is scheduled to begin at noon Monday, Dec. 31. Organizers anticipate the event will attract more than 100 dogs and their owners.

Dachshunds Love Pet Sitters

Are you getting this hint Dad? We're so bored while you're at work! Meet pretty red longhair 'Pippen,' and pet sitters Amy Isbell, and Jessica Lozez holding 'Lulu' the ferret. Amy and Jessica are employees of Treasured Pets, a professional pet sitting service out of Tyler, Texas. Excerpt from The Tyler Morning Telegraph: Spend an afternoon with the sitters and it becomes clear the job comes with its own set of challenges.
At the first stop, the women were greeted by two wiggling wiener dogs, Pippin and Ellie, who barked in anticipation of a play session.
As the dogs raced around the living room, the sitters retrieved Lulu the ferret from a nearby cage.
After several minutes of play and grooming, the animals, their energy spent, settled back in for a mid-morning snooze.

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Lady Una Troubridge

Who? Una Vincenzo, Lady Troubridge (born Margot Elena Gertrude Taylor; 8 March 1887 – 24 September 1963) was a British sculptor and translator. She is best known as the long-time partner (28 years) of Marguerite "John" Radclyffe-Hall, the author of The Well of Loneliness.
Troubridge was an educated woman who had many achievements in her own right. Most notably she was a successful translator and introduced the French writer Colette to English readers. Her talent as a sculptor prompted dancer and choreographer Nijinsky to sit for her several times.
Hall and Troubridge raised and showed dachshunds and griffons. The dachshunds shown in the above Romaine Brooks portrait of Troubridge were a prize winning pair given to her by Hall.

Meet red smooth dachshund 'Goofy' and his humans Sukrit Silas (right) with brother Shashwat of New Delhi, India. Sukrit came home from the US where he attends Princeton University; he’s among the six Indian students admitted by the elite school this year. Sukrit had a rough homecoming with his grandfather just passing 5 days before his arrival. We know he's happy to see Goofy though. Apparently Goofy is torn between chasing squirrels in the garden and the long-lost Sukrit. Read all about the Silas family at livemint.com.

Flying Jack

Best of luck to all the dachshunds racing at The 12th Annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals on Thursday in San Diego. The races kick off at 9:30 AM PST and will be nationally televised on the USA Network.

Above, meet 'Jack,' also known as 'Flying Jack,' of Temecula, California, who will be racing on Thursday. Jack's racing career began in 2006 at Ocktober Fest in Huntington Beach. Jack did pretty well. That lead his humans, who were living in Orange County at the time, to continue to race him each weekend. GO JACK GO! Excerpt from The Californian: In a time when professional sports are marred with allegations of performance-enhancing drugs, Jack's success on the track can be attributed his performance-enhancing ball. Just the mention of the word B-A-L-L sends a shudder through his little legs."I don't know when his obsession came about; he is crazy about it," Leslie said. Maya Meets Santa Claus

Meet little black and tan wire-hair 'Maya' from Martinsburg, West Virginia. Maya Weiner showed up in her holiday best Saturday morning for her first-ever photo with Santa at a fundraiser for the Berkeley County Humane Society. Excerpt from The Journal: The 9-month-old, donned in a red and black sweater, alternated between tail wagging excitement and attempts at frantic four pawed getaways, as she took her spot on the big guy’s lap. Then, the photo hit a snag. The camera needed a new battery, and as the photographers who were on hand for the day’s event at Goin’ Postal, made the necessary change, Maya climbed down, walking around the room, sniffing and investigating her surroundings. It wasn’t the traditional picture-with-Santa scene. The brown and black miniature wire-haired dachshund was part a long line of dogs that got some face time with Santa as part of a fundraiser for the Berkeley County Humane Society. Teaching a Dachshund to Hunt

Ururn is a Japanese gameshow where each week a Japanese "visitor" (usually an actor) is sent to learn a skilled trade somewhere around the world. In this espisode, a girl travels to Germany to stay with dachshund breeders and teach a young wire-hair pup 'Frida' in some basic hunting and other skills. The whole show is in Japanese and German, but luckily dachshund is universal, so it's pretty easy to tell what's going on. There are 4 clips; each clip totals about 10 minutes. Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Elizabeth Taylor

Who? Oh, Please! Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor, DBE (born 27 February 1932) is a two-time Academy Award-winning English American actress. Known for her acting skills and beauty, as well as her Hollywood lifestyle including many marriages, she is considered one of the great actresses of Hollywood’s golden years, as well as a larger-than-life celebrity.
The American Film Institute named Taylor seventh among the Greatest Female Stars of All Time.
Now, we don't know for sure that this is Elizabeth's red sable long-hair dachshund in the above photo. We can certainly hope though, as the pup seems to be pretty familiar with her. There's a rumour floating around on the internet that she acquired an entire litter of dachshunds which she later bestowed as a gift upon her then-husband Richard Burton, when the two completed filming the movie "Cleopatra."

Attention Racing Fans! Less than a week to go for the 12th Annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals in San Diego on December 27th during the nationally televised Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade. We're on the edge of our seats! The winner gets to claim the title of 'Fastest Wiener in the West," and will be featured in the parade aboard the Wienerschnitzel float. This event raised almost $20,000 for the Seal Beach Animal Care Center last year.
Since March, there have been ten qualifying dachshund races throughout the West and Southwest for this final. Find out more at the Wienerschnitzel site and Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.

Dachshund Puppies for Christmas

Meet 6-week-old 'Paisley-Sarah' and her human, almost 4-year-old Ryleigh Whalen of Plattsburgh, New York. Santa Claus delivered the young pup on Ryleigh's front porch as an early Christmas gift. We wish Ryleigh and Paisley-Sarah the best of luck. Excerpt from The Press Republican: As silent as silent could be, Santa set the pooch, in a red-bowed box, on the front porch of Ryleigh Whalen's house.
The little girl's mom, Amanda, set the surprise in motion.
"I think there's a package on the doorstep," she said.
Though she's not quite 4, Ryleigh knows an early Christmas present when she sees one -- in seconds, she had it open. Carefully, for the 6-week-old miniature dachshund looked awfully fragile, she picked it up to snuggle.
"She's my puppy, and I can keep her forever and ever," she announced.
"All she wanted was a puppy," said Amanda, who couldn't resist fulfilling her daughter's dearest wish. "That's all she asked for." Read the rest and see more photos at The Press Republican.

We haven't had a look at any youtube videos for a while, and some interesting dachshund videos have been posted over the last week. Above, the most recent dachumercial, The Right Companion: Dachshund, is the doxie breed profile from the dvd The Right Companion which has a look at 40 different dog breeds.

Our friend 'Goeman,' the Superdachshund, makes his big television debut in this video clip, and it looks like he won the top prize on the show! Way to go Goeman! Check out Goeman's original Superdachshund video we featured way back in July right here. When's the last time you've seen it?

Expo TV offers video product reviews and consumer reports, and they featured a 'Gift-O-Matic' clip on dachshund salt and pepper shakers of all things. We love our dachshund collectibles.

Finally, it is the holiday season after all, and little red smooth 'Amy' gets to open an early Christmas present with the family and play with it in this video Weiner Dog Gets Christmas Present. Her tail doesn't stop. Woof!

Dachshund Rescued from Python Snake!

Just yesterday in our post about Dachshund Family Values, we were speaking so fondly about life in the country, and we might need to retract those statements because we totally forgot about the coyotes, hawks, and apparently in Malalane, South Africa,.... PYTHONS! Suddenly, dodging the salt on the icy sidewalks in the city doesn't seem so bad.
Meet pretty solid black smooth 'Lilly,' one of her pups, and her teen human Elske Strauss. Elske is our dachshund hero! She rescued pregnant Lilly from the jaws of an 18-foot-long python, and then gave her mouth-to-snout resuscitation. Wow! Way to go Elske! Excerpt from News 24: Like a real-life Crocodile Dundee, 18-year-old Elske Strauss took on a huge python with just a stick - because the five-and-a-half metre reptile was busy swallowing her darling (pregnant) dachshund, Lilly!
And thanks to Elske's bravery and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, Lilly survived the ordeal and gave birth to seven pups last week.
"I'm dead scared of snakes. God gave me strength that day," the born-and-bred farmgirl said.
The drama involving Lilly and the reptile began on October 30 in a stream next to their farmhouse on Strathmore farm.
Elske, who'd just finished writing matric at Nelspruit High School, was watching TV when she heard her dog whining. She ran out and saw that a python had got hold of her dog in the shallow water of a stream that flows past their house, some three metres away.
"The giant python's body was already curled around my dog, four times. Lilly's head was inside its jaws, and the reptile was starting to swallow her," said Elske.
The only weapon she could find was a stick. "I hit the snake on its head again, and again, and again."
When the snake refused to let go, she jumped into the water, lifted it out and threw it down on the embankment.
"I screamed and hit the snake again. At one stage it spat out Lilly's head and took aim at me."
The moment the snake loosened its grip, the teen grabbed the dog.
"Lilly's tongue was deep blue. She wasn't breathing and her eyes were rolled back."
She put her mouth over her limp dog's mouth and started giving it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
"After four of five breaths, the dog coughed and water started coming out of its mouth," Elske said.
After a visit to the vet, an injection and lots of love, Lilly was soon back at the farm and for the past few weeks has been romping with Billy, the father of her pups.
Just more than a week ago Lilly had seven pups, six of which have survived.
Elske's father, Flip Strauss, said several of his dogs had disappeared on the farm. "We suspected that it might be snakes, but I never thought that a python would venture that near the house." Stauss said their dogs regularly swam in the stream next to the house to cool off in the stifling Lowveld heat. The snake was later killed by farmworkers.

Dachshund Family Values

Now, we're city dogs, but boy do we love the country. We'd love to have an exchange program like this for dachshunds, but visiting our doxie cousin 'Rudy' every few months in downstate rural Illinois will just have to do!

Since 1877, the Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations in the country to more than 1.7 million New York City children from disadvantaged communities. Excerpt from The News Times: When Roberto Otero was 8, he came to Ridgefield courtesy of the Fresh Air Fund.
The Bronx child learned about picking blueberries, swimming in the ocean -- but most of all, he learned about the warmth and love of Allison Gable's family in Ridgefield, his host family.
Today, at 15, Roberto is visiting the Gables for the holidays.
"It feels like I've been adopted into the family," he said of the Gables. "Allison is just like having another mom. I've been coming out here for quite a few holidays. It's a very nice break from the city. Even the dogs here are like family to me," he said of the Gable's two [three?] dachshunds. We love those handsome show doxies! Yesterday was the final day of the Tidewater Kennel Club of Virginia’s 111th Beach Holiday Classic All-Breed Dog Show in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Hundreds of dogs competed to win the points to become AKC champions. Excerpt from HamptonRoads.com: The show was one of dozens held over the weekend. Many who live in the South and the East chose the show because of its size, said American Kennel Club judge Betsy Horn Humer. The event accepted less than 1,000 entries, well below the 3,000 to 3,500 entries competitors see at larger shows. Judges came from across the country. That makes for a nice, small, friendly dog show that isn’t overly loud, said Humer, of Pungoteague. Read all about the event at HamptonRoads.com.

Dachshunds Teleconferencing with their Dads in Iraq in the News

What a special holiday treat for little red 'Sable' and her family. This is a photo of Master Gunnery Sgt.-select Kenneth Reynolds in Al Asad, Iraq, on a teleconference with his wife, Teresa, and dachshund Sable. Excerpt from The Los Angeles Times: Teresa Reynolds, daughter Kelsea, son Tyler and their miniature dachshund Sable settled into chairs Saturday morning at the San Diego Supercomputer Center for an early Christmas present.
A satellite connection was established, and soon Marine Master Gunnery Sgt.-select Kenneth Reynolds was on the screen from the air base at Al Asad, Iraq, as part of a program to keep military families in touch with deployed loved ones through teleconferencing.
There was laughter, a few tears, some jokes about shipping Sable to Iraq in a Christmas stocking, and then some inquiries from Dad about how Kelsea, 16, and Tyler, 12, were doing in school.
Finally the joking and asking of questions fell away."I miss you," Kenneth Reynolds, a noncommissioned officer in charge of a crew of air controllers, said quietly."
I miss you, too, sweetheart," his wife said.

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Ernst Hofmann

Who? Dachshund Lover Ernst Hofmann (1880 - 1945) was a German theatre and film actor and producer who worked in over 80 films. He was considered one of Germany's most attractive actors in the early 1900's. In the 1930's and early 1940's he published light novels and crime stories using the pseudonym 'Ernst Hofmann von Schönholtz.' Source

Dachshunds in Art: Earl Wettstein

Wettstein's Weiner Dog Gothic

Ever wonder what famous works of art would look like if the figures were dachshunds instead of people? Looking for a dachshund art collection? Look no further than the 24 satirical paintings and sculptures offerd by Earl Wettstein. The Arizona Daily Star had a look at the artist: A retired ad man, Wettstein, 76, has been painting for more than a dozen years, the last six or so at the spacious studio behind his Foothills home.
He's painted several series in the last few years, including one featuring his beloved late dachshunds, Turbo and Friska, posed in satirical takeoffs of such famous paintings as "American Gothic" by Grant Wood, and Edvard Munch's "The Scream."

Dachshunds Blessed in Richmond, Virginia

Meet little 'Milly' and her human Cindy King. They attended a special blessing of the animals held by the Richmond Police Department and the Friends of the Mountain Squad in Richmond, Virginia, yesterday. Here's an excerpt from Richmond.com: More than three dozens dogs, from collies to pit bulls to dachshunds, a handful of cats and a trio of police horses surrounded the Shockoe Slip Fountain, which was dedicated to the "one who loves animals."
"This is in recognition of working animals and the important work they do," said Sue Mullins, a charter member of the Friends group. "This is to create awareness and to show how much people like animals."
Though the event started as a way to recognize police horses and dogs, it's grown to include companion animals as well.
"It's so sweet because I love animals," said Cindy King, who works at the Martin Agency nearby and brought her dachshund Milly.

Dachshunds Ready for Winter Weather in the News

Meet pretty red smooth 'Lucy.' She's the coverdoxie for a story about pets and winter weather by The Daily Statesman out of Dexter, Missouri. Lucy's ready for the cold and snow with her warm, yet fashionable outerwear. Here's an excerpt from the article: They are our best friends. They are always happy to see us no matter how long we've been gone and no matter what mood we are in.
Being equipped with a fur coat doesn't ensure the safety of your pet during the winter season.
Smaller dogs like Chihuahuas and Dachshunds have a higher metabolism than their larger counterparts. That means that they burn energy quickly and aren't able to maintain their own body temperatures in the cold. And without a lot of hair to help insulate them, they can succumb to the affects of the cold quickly.
"They don't tolerate the cold well at all," said Stoddard County Veterinarian Dr. Kyle Ouzts. "When you have to take a little dog out during the cold, it's better to buy a sweater or jacket for them to wear while they are out … and remember to bring them in sooner.
"Don't leave them out as long."

Dachshunds Going to Rehab in the News

What a great pic! This is pretty red smooth 'Biscuit,' a four-year-old miniature dachshund working out on the water treadmill at the office of Veterinarian Ava Frick in Union, Mo. Thanks to Darla W. for sending the link to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, where they had a look at Dr. Frick's practice. Here's an excerpt: "For some animals, coming here is their last hope," Frick explains. "It's a challenge to try to find something to help them. This place came about because of pain. I wanted to find a way for animals to benefit from pain relief like people do. I knew there had to be a way that what helps people could help animals, too," she said.
At the Animal Fitness Center, Frick incorporates holistic care along with rehabilitation, pain management, chiropractic, acupuncture and general health assessment. She has studied physical therapy used on people to help animals. Read all about it at the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Joey at ten weeks. "I wear my heart on my sleeve."

Joey can't sleep nights. He's having an identity crisis. Piebald dachshunds are seen all throughout the history of dachshunds, but they're not in the AKC breed standard. Joey says that the piebald pattern is a legacy of the breeds that went into creating the dachshund that we know and love today.

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Waldi, the First Official Olympic Mascot

' Waldi,' the very first official Olympic mascot, has been in the news lately, as the mascots for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada were recently unveiled: Miga the snowboarding sea bear, Quatchi the shy sasquatch, Sumi the animal spirit, and their sidekick Mukmuk, a rare marmot. (Huh?)

Back in 1972, when mascots were a bit more 'tangible,' Waldi was created for the Summer Olympics in Germany. A dachshund was chosen because it represented the attributes required for athletes: resistance, tenacity, and agility. (Woof!)

Waldi was designed by Otl Aicher and modeled off a real dog, a long-haired dachshund named 'Cherie von Birkenhof.' Waldi's head and tail were blue, and his body was stripes of the other Olympic colors.
